And it really is a total head-scratcher, because like nothing has happened this year at all in terms of law enforcement changes and messages being sent that American authorities are now taking the law seriously and are serious about cracking down on crime. Nothing at all like that has happened, so this is a total mystery!
Yeah, I have no clue. Various PDs are putting out press releases saying "yay us!", but I am skeptical about the stated programs having the effect they claim... and that the effect seems nationwide.
I was sorta being sarcastic. I'm thinking that Trump, Bondi, ICE, Patel, Rubio etc. are having an impact. People say he's an authoritarian at best, a fascist at worst, but this is not the environment in which you want to commit a bad crime, especially if you immigration status is anything other than citizen of the US.
The drop in homicides started last year, fwiw. Just as the drug OD deaths decrease started last year.
BUT....yes, there are plenty of homicides not happening because there may be people trying to keep a low profile. If they're not around to start none... they won't be none.
