I'm thinking that if you were looking for a sensitive "outcome measure" for the success, or otherwise, of modern liberal society, you could do worse than read this detailed, but depressing, post.

At the time of considerable affluence and personal freedom the US age adjusted male suicide rate has increased about 40% in the last 20 or so years. (From about 17 to almost 24 per 100,000 people)

The US educated and moneyed class have closed their minds to this issue blaming the victims for a failure to adapt or emotionally adjust to the new envirnment.

This will turn out to be a huge mistake. Locking Trump in a Goergian jail is not going to solve the problem.

Well, if you look at how long this trend has been going on, and that it cuts across both sexes and all races/ethnicities, I think you may realize this really doesn't have a political dimension... at least, not in that way.

Similarly for drug overdoses. Once upon a time, people thought it all was about oxycontin, and it was "just" "those people"... it's pretty much everybody, in terms of all income levels, and everywhere.

Suicide does differ somewhat. You'll see when I break it out by age groups. A lot of people don't realize what the age structure looks like.

What I mean to say is that this looks like a deep issue in US society. I agree that it's not party political. It seems everybody (with any influence) is ignoring this issue or, say you say, blaming the victims. Governments of both hues have debased the currency, exported manufacturing, built up huge debts, and witnessed a steep rise in addiction and other mental and physical health problems. Your post just adds to the general picture.

It certainly connects to the drug overdose trend.
